Academic Achievement for Grades 3-6
Synopsis
"I had soccer practice." "My sister had a birthday party." "I fell asleep after trick-or-treating." "My dog ate it." Any educator has heard hundreds of excuses for missing homework. In this challenging and exciting class, students learn the value of perseverance through a group activity, watch a scene that shows how to overcome anxiety in test-taking situations, and practice asking for help when faced with homework they find challenging.
Educational Objectives
- To provide students with an opportunity to measure personal growth in the accomplishment of a task
- To share with students simple strategies they can use to succeed in a high-pressure test-taking environment
- To brainstorm reasons why some students don't do their homework and how they can overcome those obstacles
- To provide students with an opportunity to practice asking for help
- To brainstorm why, even in elementary school, it's important to try your best on homework and tests

Synopsis
If young people fail to learn strong academic habits early, studies show they will find these habits harder to acquire when they are older. In this thought-provoking class, students will play a game that demonstrates perseverance, analyze a scene that explores the feelings of disappointment that can result from failing to make good academic choices, have a discussion about the obstacles that stop some people from completing homework or doing well on tests, and role-play asking for help.

- To show the consequences of not being self-reliant
- To brainstorm why students might not do their homework and ways of overcoming those obstacles
