Academic Achievement for Grades 6-8

Synopsis
If young people fail to learn strong academic habits early, studies show they will find these habits harder to acquire when they are older.  In this thought-provoking class, students will play a game that demonstrates perseverance, analyze a scene that explores the feelings of disappointment that can result from failing to make good academic choices, have a discussion about the obstacles that stop some people from completing homework or doing well on tests, and role-play asking for help.

Educational Objectives

  1. To define "perseverance" and "self-reliance"
  2. To show the consequences of not being self-reliant
  3. To brainstorm why students might not do their homework and ways of overcoming those obstacles
  4. To share with students simple strategies they can use in a high-pressure testing environment
  5. To encourage students to ask for help when needed
