Homework and Test-Taking Skills for Grades 3-6

Synopsis
"I had soccer practice."  "My sister had a birthday party."  "I fell asleep after trick-or-treating."  "My dog ate it."  Any educator has heard hundreds of excuses for missing homework.  In this challenging and exciting class, students learn the value of perseverance through a group activity, watch a scene that shows how to overcome anxiety in test-taking situations, and practice asking for help and exercising self-control when faced with homework they find challenging.  

Educational Objectives

  1. To provide students with an opportunity to measure personal success in the accomplishment of a task
  2. To share with students simple strategies they can use when in a high-pressure test-taking environment
  3. To brainstorm reasons why some students don't do their homework
  4. To provide students with an opportunity to practice using self-motivation
  5. To provide students with an opportunity to practice asking for help

Audience size:  35 students maximum in a classroom; up to 40 students in a multi-purpose room

Homework and Test-Taking Skills for Grades 6-8

Synopsis
If young people fail to learn strong academic habits early, studies show they will find these habits harder to acquire when they are older.  In this thought-provoking class, students will practice concentrating on their own responsibilities in the face of distraction, analyze a scene that explores the feelings of disappointment that can result from failing to make good academic choices, play a game that demonstrates perseverance, and practice asking for help.
