Empathy Classes for Grades K-6

K-2: Synopsis
Edmond the Elephant was looking forward to his first day of school--he was certain he would make a lot of friends.  Yet at the end of the day, he finds himself with no new friends at all.  In this funny and involving class, your students will assist Olin the Owl as he discovers that a lack of empathy is at the bottom of Edmond's troubles.  Together, Olin and your students will teach Edmond how to consider other people's feelings and pay compliments.

  4. To teach students how to tell how others are feeling by their body language and tone of voice

3-6: Synopsis
It's picture day, and Devonte is extremely nervous. He never takes a good school picture and it doesn't look like this year will be any different: At lunch he spills pudding all over his shirt, and all Courtney does is laugh! It isn't that she's trying to be mean; she just isn't using her empathy. In this engaging class, students will examine why people don't always use empathy, consider what Courtney could have done instead, and act out other situations at their school that might require empathy.

3-6: Educational Objectives

  1. To define "empathy"
  2. To brainstorm times when empathy is and isn't shown in the school environment
  3. To practice reading others' body language and tone of voice in order to interpret how they might be feeling
  4. To role-play using empathy
  5. To encourage students to be kind to others at all times

Audience size:  35 students maximum in a classroom; up to 40 students in a multi-purpose room
