Fantasy Football
Topic: Higher Education
Grade Level: 4-6

Synopsis
Aspiring pro-football player Roger Lopez is almost finished with his fifth-grade year when he scores the opportunity to compete in a reality game show.  If he proves that he has what it takes to make an ‘A’ on his science test, he gets to choose between a PlayStation 3 and a fully-paid first year of college for himself and a friend, but he’s feeling pressure from all sides.  His best friend, Martin, wants Roger to choose the PS3, while Roger’s older cousin, Rae, wants Roger to choose the college tuition.  Eventually, Roger finds that he needs to evaluate what he wants, and learns that, even having made some mistakes, asking for help is the first step to achieving his goals.

Educational Objectives

  1. To inspire kids to want to go to college
  2. To help students realize the importance of college in their future
  3. To encourage students to think creatively about how they can put their abilities and interests to use in a wide variety of careers
  4. To help kids to envision setting goals and using priority-setting techniques to reach the goals that will help them reach the careers they have imagined for themselves
  5. To help kids to understand that there are ways of paying for college
  6. To provide students with the skills needed to make positive choices and maintain determination as they respond to difficult situations in their lives

Follow-Up Classes
During the follow-up class for CLIMB's higher education preparedness play, Fantasy Football, a trained actor leads students through activities that challenge them to ask themselves, “What am I good at?” and “What do I like to do?”  The actor also shares eight ways of paying for college and explains the four different kinds of higher education students can consider as they follow their dreams for the future.

“CLIMB Theatre performed for our fourth through sixth grade students today and they were phenomenal.  Students were totally engaged in this highly motivating play.  Helping urban children with a high level of poverty in their lives contemplate and plan for the future is of enormous importance to Minnesota’s future.”
