| Lockdown Topic: Harassment Prevention Grade Level: 6-9
Synopsis In harassment situations, there are almost always three types of students: the perpetrator, the victim, and the bystanders (students who watch and do nothing). According to one study, bystanders who do intervene stop bullying 57% of the time in less than 10 seconds. CLIMB's three new bullying and harassment plays inspire bystanders to intervene. Todd Slichter has managed to steer clear of the rumors, gossip, insults, and fights rampant through out his middle school until Todd's lab partner, Stacia, begins bullying his other lab partner, Byron. As Todd and Byron build an unlikely friendship, Todd begins to feel empathy for his new friend, especially when Stacia launches a vicious campaign of cyberbullying aimed at Byron. Still, it take s a lockdown to finally push Todd, the bystander, into action.

The presentation not only calls by name and action the blatant reality of harassment, they also give students hope that they are not alone, and that solutions and self advocacy are a possibility. We see and feel the reality that being a bystander can further damage and hurt someone being victimized.” - T. Skahan, Teacher, Sauk Rapids Middle School, Sauk Rapids, MN |
