Shattered
Topic: Methamphetamine Use Prevention
Grade Level: 7-12

This project includes a performance of Shattered followed by classes in individual classrooms.

Synopsis
The following words, spoken by a young recovering meth addict, inspired the play Shattered and its follow-up classes:  “You want to keep other kids from trying it?  It’s not enough to just scare them.  They have to see themselves.  Unless you are the story—you won’t believe it can happen to you.”  Shattered features a popular high school student who, in one moment, makes a choice that irrevocably changes the course of her life.  Students in the audience will watch with interest, hope, and finally horror as Kayla continues a downward spiral that destroys her relationships, her health, and her future; becoming, in the end, exactly the person she never believed she could be—a meth addict.

Educational Objectives:

  1. To communicate the dangers of meth use, without the intent of scaring teens (Although this may be a result of the honest portrayal of the effects of this deadly drug)
  2. To teach a meth vocabulary
  3. To communicate the attractions and initially pleasant experiences meth use generates without having meth use seem desirable
  4. To include the dangers meth poses for the environment
  5. To include the dangers meth use poses for the user’s body, psyche, brain, relationships, and future
  6. To realistically portray fairly common experiences teenage meth addicts have in the progress of their addiction
  7. To avoid triggers that may prompt current or recovering meth users to use again
  8. To avoid triggers that could increase meth use among teenagers (This has been known to happen when one drug is the focus of presentations.)
  9. To show that trying meth often occurs in a single moment when a teen’s guard is down because of alcohol use and/or a stressful experience
  10. To indicate that teens can have different reactions to meth and that some teens can remain quite functional, at least for a time
  11. To assist teens in choosing not to use methamphetamines

Follow-Up Classes
The play will leave the audience believing that meth addiction is horrible and possible and that no one is exempt from its ravages.  But it may leave the audience with concerns or questions: "What things could happen in life to have someone be vulnerable to saying, 'I'll try it.’  How do I become self-aware enough to know when I might be vulnerable?  How do I keep my guard up?  How do I discourage someone else from trying meth—or other illegal substances?"  Using role-play, improvisation and input from the students, CLIMB’s 40-minute follow-up classes, will address these and other questions.

"As educators, we can always tell when our lessons hit home-the students listen attentively at the edge of their seats.  We certainly observed this at the CLIMB presentation.  This program very likely saved lives a few years down the road.  Thank you to all of the people who made this program a success."
