| Valentine's Day Topic: Social Skills Grade Level: 3-6
Beth, Eddie and Tess are just about the least likely friends imaginable. Beth is confident and popular, though a trifle manipulative and lonely. Eddie is shy and mildly obsessed with The Beatles, but kind and interested in other people. Tess is at her fifth school in five years. As the child of a psychologist, she has learned the "science of friendship", but doesn’t know how to apply it successfully to her own life. However unlikely this threesome is, by the end of their after school program on Valentine's Day, each will learn a lesson about making and keeping friends, empathy, and the difference between friendship and popularity.
- To demonstrate a clear and replicable procedure for initiating a friendship
- To help students understand the difference between popularity and friendship
- To encourage the students to adopt skills that will make for a strong mutual friendship
- To demonstrate antisocial behaviors such as threats and exclusion, and demonstrate the consequences of such behaviors
- To guide students to look for validation, conflict resolution, comfort, companionship and empathy from their friends
- To encourage students to assert themselves on behalf of their friends

"Thank you for coming to our school and performing your play on friendship last week. The teachers and students talked about the plays for days after you performed, and isn't that the objective, to get the students talking about friendship and helping them become more aware of what kind of friend they want to be." -Chris Frye, Counselor, Malone Elementary, Prescott, WI
